IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING COMPETITION

Due to Hotel rules there are some changes that must be adhered to, to compete:

​

  • Everyone must put their make up on in a special room set aside for competitors.  If someone decides they want to be in clown, other than competition, this must be put on in the special room provided in the convention area and taken off before leaving convention area.

  • The Hotel does not allow anyone in make up or face paint anywhere in the public areas of the hotel.

  • Anyone with face paint inside of the convention area must take if off before heading into the hotel public area, including the elevators and hallways. 

  • Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

FAVE Convention General Competition Rules

I.  Eligibility:

 

 A. All competitors must be registered at the convention at the full registration fee.

 

 B. Only one member’s number is needed to sign in as a group, however all competitors must show their badges to sign in.

 

 C.  All rules are subject to change and interpretation by competition committee and judges.

 

 D. No members of the Board are allowed to compete, except in Balloons, Parade ability and Masters Competition if they meet qualifications.  Instructors of current convention are not allowed to compete in the area they are teaching. Need to clear with competition chair first.

 

II. Rules of Conduct:

​

Failure to comply with the following rules will result in expulsion from the competition.

 

 A. You must conduct yourselves in such a manner as to be a credit and asset to the FAVE community.

 

 B.  All attendees, competing or not, will totally abstain from the use of alcohol immediately prior to, or during competition.

 

 C.  All competitors will refrain from the use of any props or items which might offend general audience or embarrass the convention.

​

D.  Live animals are not permitted in any category.

​

E.  All ID tags, badges, or identifying patches must be removed or concealed. ID badges and tags are those that show your name, clown name, or alley name.  Major Organization patches will be allowed (COAI, WCA, ISCA, etc.)

 

F. Contestants are not allowed to speak with judges during competitions, unless responding to questions or comments from the judges.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

I. Description:

 

A. Individual performances will consist of one competitor.  One performer only on stage for the entire performance.

 

II. Eligibility:

 

A. Contestants must meet the eligibility requirements stated in Article I, Page 1. 

 

B. Contestants who have won 1st place in this category must wait until a year after next before entering again.

 

III. Awards:

 

A. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

 

IV. General Rules:

 

A. The drawing for the performing order will take place right before the start of competition. Once your number has been recorded by the Competition Chair, no exchanging of numbers is allowed.

 

B. Contestants must perform in order according to the number drawn. If contestants are late for their turn, they will be disqualified.

 

C. All contestants will have one (1) minute set up time and one minute clean up time; this includes the cleanup of any liquids left on the floor.  If time limit exceeds one minute, 10 points will be deducted from total score.

 

D. Each contestant is responsible for his/her set up and clean up. Any props being stored on stage behind curtains must be approved by Competition Director. No assistance is allowed, unless approved by Competition Director.

 

E. Performance time is limited to five (5) minutes or less.  Any contestant whose performance exceeds the five-minute limit will lose 10 points from total score. At 5 minute 15 seconds they will be disqualified from competition.

 

F. One minute before the time limit will expire (4 minutes into the performance) a whistle will blow to inform the performer of the one minute time remaining.  A second whistle will sound if the contestant has exceeded their time limit and are disqualified.

​

 

G. All performances will be in good taste and in no way offensive to the general audience.

 

H. Any act which causes injury to a spectator will be disqualified from competition.

​

I. A CD/MP3 player and operator will be provided by FAVE, to play any music the contestant provided before the performance. CD/MP3 must be present and ready to play.  CD/MP3 must be clearly marked with your competition number on it.

 

V. Judging:

 

A. All contestants will be judged according to the score sheet as follows:

 

1. Has the performance been well rehearsed and well presented?  (1 - 15 points)

​

2. Is there broad crowd appeal?  (1 - 10 points)

​

3. How clear was the beginning, middle and end?  (1- 10 points)

​

4. Did the audience seem to enjoy it? (1-10 points) 

​

5. Did the Participant dress appropriately for their act? (1 - 15 points)

​

6. Do accessories, music, props or lack of, compliment performance? (1-10 points)

​

7. How original was it?  (1 - 15 points)

​

8. How funny, entertaining or engaging was it? (1 - 15 points)

​

    B. Each contestant's score sheet will be available to him/her after the awards have been presented.

GROUP PERFORMANCE

I. Description:

 

A. Group performance consists of more than one person on stage, or if volunteer(s) are called on stage to assist.

 

II. Eligibility:

 

A. Contestants must meet the eligibility requirements stated in Article I, Page 1. 

 

B. Contestants may perform in only one Group performance during the convention unless approved by Competition Chair.

​

III. Awards:

 

A. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are four or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

 

IV. General Rules:

 

A. The drawing for the performing order will take place right before the start of competition. Once your number has been recorded by the Competition Chair, no exchanging of numbers is allowed unless approved by the Competition Chair.

 

B. Contestants must perform in order according to the number drawn. If contestants are late for their turn, they will be disqualified.

 

C. All groups will have one (3) minute set up time and one minute clean up time; this includes the cleanup of any liquids left on the floor.  If time limit exceeds 3 minutes, 10 points will be deducted from total score.

 

D. Each group is responsible for their set up and clean up. Any props being stored on stage behind curtains must be approved by Competition Director. No assistance is allowed, unless approved by Competition Director.

 

E. Performance time is limited to five (5) minutes or less.  Any contestant whose performance exceeds the five-minute limit will lose 10 points from total score. At 5 minutes and 30  seconds they will be disqualified from competition.

 

F. One minute before the time limit will expire (4 minutes into the performance) a whistle will blow to inform the performer of the one minute time remaining.  A second whistle will sound if the contestant has exceeded their time limit and are disqualified.​

 

G. All performances will be in good taste and in no way offensive to the general audience.

 

H. Any act which causes injury to a spectator will be disqualified from competition.

I. An operator will be provided to play any CD/MP3 the contestant provided before the contestants provides before the performance. They must be clearly marked with your competition number on it.

F. All entries will be judged according to the score sheet as follows:

 

G. What is the overall appearance of the entry?  (0 - 20 points).

 

H. Are parade props or gimmicks original, clever and well presented?  (0 - 20 points).

 

I. How does the crowd react to the entry and the performance?  (0 - 20 points).

GROUP PARADE-ABILITY

I. Description:

​

A. Entries will have 15 seconds to perform before the judges unless the group exceeds 10 people. In which case the group shall have an extra 5 seconds per 10 additional people. Exceeding the time limit may cause you to lose points and exceeding by more than 5 seconds will result in disqualification.

B. DO NOT HOLD UP THE PARADE,you must keep moving.

C. Props or gimmicks may be used.

​

D. Performances will be in good taste and in no way offensive.

​

E. Any performance which results in an injury will result in disqualification.

balloon COMPETITIONs

I.  Eligibility:


 A.  Contestants must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I of the General Competition Rules


 B.   Contestant may enter only one time in each category.

​

II. Categories

​

A. People’s Choice and display competitions: These competitions are untimed, but entries must be submitted between 5:30-6:00 PM on Monday for judging between 6:00 and 6:30 PM.

​

B. Working Competitions 

​

1. Solo - 12 minute working balloons on your own

​

2. Team—1 hour working balloons with a team

​

3. Headband - 12 minute working balloons on a headband 

​

C. Small Display Sculpture—Untimed display pieces that can fit into an 11”x11”x11” box, sculptures will be tested to see if they fit into that box. Small display sculptures will be due Monday between 9:00 and 9:30 PM

​

D. Medium Display Sculpture—Untimed display sculpture pieces that fit into a 20”x20”x20” box, sculptures will be tested to see if they fit into that box. Medium display sculptures will be due Monday between 9:00 and 9:30 PM

​

E. Large Display Sculpture—Untimed display sculpture of unlimited size. Large sculptures will be due on Tuesday between 9:00 and 9:30 PM.

​

F. Junior Joey Display Sculpture—These competitions are for the younger convention goers and will follow all the same rules as the adult versions of the competitions

​

G. Masters—To compete in this you must submit an entry to all 3 categories of display competitions and judges determine if the sculptures are of a high enough caliber to be considered for this competition

​

III. Rules of Competition:

​

A. No talking to judges

​

B. Instructors may only participate in Master’s competition

​

C. Display competitions are on the honors system and should be an individual effort

 

D. Convention ID is necessary to compete in all competitions

 

E. Non-Balloon tools (cutter, floral wire, sharpies, etc.) ARE allowed in all display competitions and most working competitions (if not allowed it will be expressly stated)

​

F. Only Display Competition winners will earn award medals while Working Competition winners will receive a certificate instead

​

FACE PAINTING COMPETITIOn

I.  Eligibility:

 A.  Contestants must meet the eligibility requirements stated in Article 1 at the beginning of this section

 

 B.  Contestants who have won first place in a category must wait one year before entering that category again.

 

 C. Face painting will be judged in three categories

  1. Half-face or large arm tattoo

  2. Full-face (designs cover all or large portion of face)

  3. Fast and Furious (which is face or arms).

 

 D.  Painter must be registered for the convention and are required to attend the pre-competition meeting.

 

 E. Painter is responsible for providing his/her own model, or ask Competition chair for help if necessary.  Painter must be wearing convention badge. 

 

 F. Painters are responsible for their own supplies.  All paints must be made for use on skin.

 

 G. Full-face time will be 20 minutes. Half-face/tattoo will be 15 minutes. Fast and Furious will be on face or arms with a time limit of five minutes.

 

 H.  Judging will be made on technique (use of brushes, sponges & etc.), creativity  (originality), use of color & dimension. Is the kit clean and presentable?

 

 I. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are only three contestants only one award will be  presented. Contestants may compete in all three categories.

WHITE FACE clown MAKEUP

A. White Face 

​

1. Description: All white face with features such as nose or mouth painted in with red or black. Other colors may be used to add highlights and additional decorations. He or she is the more sophisticated of the clowns, and seem to generally be in control of situations.

 

B. Eligibility:

​

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

​

2. Clowns who have won a first place award in the white face category in W.R.C.A.  Competition in the past year may not enter this category. They may enter another makeup category or the Masters category.

​

3. Those who qualify to compete as Master Clown (previous first place award in makeup in the past year or those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them as professional clowns, determined by Competition Chair and judges) are not eligible to compete in this category.

4. A contestant entered in this category may not enter another makeup category or the Master makeup competition.

​

​

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

 

D. Judging Criteria:

1. Contestants will have all skin covered by self applied makeup or costume.

​

2. Contestants are required to wear gloves.

3. Contestants will not be allowed to carry anything in their hands.

4. Contestants will be judged on makeup, costume, and a 15 second performance.

AUGUSTE clown MAKEUP

A. Auguste 

​

1. Face base color is basically a flesh tone with pink or reddish hues. Features are painted in or highlighted with red, black, or other colors. Features are also accented with white. This is a character clown with a more comic face. He or she is more impish and slapstick, and actions are wilder, broader, and bigger and more prank like.

 

B. Eligibility:

 

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. Clowns who have won a first place award in the Auguste category in W.R.C.A. Competition within the past year may not enter this category. They may enter another makeup category or the Master makeup category if they qualify.

 

3. Those who qualify to compete as Master Clown (previous first place awards in makeup in the last three years or those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them as professional clowns, determined by competition chair and judges) are not eligible to compete in this category.

 

4. A contestant entered in this category may not enter another makeup category or the Master makeup competition.

 

C. Awards

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

D. Judging Criteria:

 

1. Contestants will have skin covered by self applied makeup or costume, and are required to wear gloves.

 

2. Contestants will not be allowed to carry anything in their hands.

 

3. Contestants will be judged on makeup, costume and 15 second performance.

 

 

TRAMP/HOBO clown MAKEUP

A. Description:

​

1. Face with flesh tone base that is accented with red, white, black or gray. A dirty effect is sometimes created with the makeup. He can be a sloppy character who frowns and is very sad. He can be a down and out character with an optimistic outlook on life. He can wear old clothes that are neatly kept. They may be bright and colorful. This clown may be either sad or happy.

​

B. Eligibility:

 

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. Clowns who have won a first place award in this category in Makeup Competition within the past year may not enter this category. They may enter another makeup category or the Master makeup.

 

3. Those who qualify to compete as Master Clowns (previous first place awards in makeup in the last year or those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them as professional clowns, determined by competition chair and judges) are not eligible to compete in this category.

 

4. A contestant entered in this category may not enter another makeup category or the Master makeup competition.

​

C. Awards:

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

 

D. Judging Criteria:

 

1. Contestants must have at least one half of face covered by self applied makeup or costume.              

 

2. Contestants are required to wear gloves (Cut-off fingers are accepted).

 

3. Contestants will not be allowed to carry anything in their hands.

 

4. Contestants will be judged on makeup, costume and 15 second performance.

CHARACTER clown MAKEUP

A. Description:

 

1. The clowns competing in this category must be readily identifiable as a specific type of person, for example: baseball player, football player, cowboy, Indian, artist, organ grinder, etc. Makeup must compliment the character.

​

B. Eligibility:

 

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. Clowns who have won a first place award in the Character category in W.R.C.A. Competition within the past year may not enter this category. They may enter another makeup category or the Master makeup category if they qualify.

 

3. Those who qualify to compete as Master Clowns (previous first place awards in makeup in the last three years or those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them as professional clowns, determined by competition chair and judges) are not eligible to compete in this category.

 

4. A contestant entered in this category may not enter another makeup category or the Master makeup competition.

​

C. Awards:

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.

​

D. Judging Criteria:

 

1. Makeup coverage depends on the character being depicted and must be self applied. If you are not sure, ask the Competition Chair.

2. Contestants will be allowed to carry props in their hands.

​

3. Contestants are not required to wear gloves.

​

4. Contestants will be judged on makeup, costume and a 15 second performance.

​

SENIOR clown MAKEUP

A. Description:

 

1. This category is open to all clowns 60 years old by the first day of the convention.  Clowns will be judged on makeup and  costume.  Makeup must be self-applied.  White Face, Auguste, Tramp and Character clowns will compete together.

​

B. Eligibility:

 

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. Clowns who have won a first place in this category must wait one year before entering this category again. They may enter another makeup category or in the Masters Makeup category.

 

3. Those who qualify to compete as Master Clown (previous first place awards in  makeup or those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them as professional clowns, determined by competition chair and judges) are not eligible to compete in this category.

 

4. A contestant entered in this category may not enter another makeup category or the Master Makeup competition.

​

C. Awards:

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners. If there are three or less contestants, awards may or may not be presented on a percentage basis.  

​

D. Judging Criteria:

 

1. Makeup coverage depends on the clown character being depicted. 

 

2. Only character clowns will be allowed to carry props that are appropriate for their character. 

 

3. Contestants will be judged on makeup, costume and a 15 second performance.

JUNIOR CLOWN MAKEUP

A. Description:

 

1. Open to clowns under age 13.  Clowns will be judged on makeup and costume. Makeup must be self-applied in the presence of a judge or competition official. White Face, Auguste, Tramp and Character clowns will compete together.

​

B. Eligibility:

 

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. All clowns must be between 6 & 13 years of age.

 

3. Clowns who have won first place in this category must wait one year before competing again or if over 10 years old may enter teen category.

​

C. Awards:

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners.  

​

D. Judging Criteria:

 

1. Makeup coverage depends on the character being depicted.

 

2. Contestants may or may not wear gloves depending on the character being depicted.

 

3. Only Character clowns will be allowed to carry props that are appropriate to their character.

 

4. Contestants will be judged on make-up, costume and a 15 second performance.

 

 

TEEN CLOWN MAKEUP

A. Description:

​

1. Open to clowns from the age of 13 – 17 (or 11 and 12 if they have won first place in junior makeup) Clowns will be judged on makeup and costume. Makeup must be self-applied.  White Face, Auguste, Tramp and Character clowns will compete together.

 

B. Eligibility:

​

1. Clowns must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, page 1.

 

2. All clowns must be 13-17 years of age. (Or 11 and 12 if they meet above qualifications).

 

3. Clowns who have won first place in this category will either wait one year or may compete in regular adult make-up categories such as White Face, Auguste etc.

​

C. Awards:

 

1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place winners.

​

D. Judging Criteria

 

1. Make-up coverage depends on the character being depicted.

 

2. Gloves may or may not be worn depending on the character being depicted.

 

3. Only character clowns will be allowed to carry props that are appropriate for their character.

 

4. Contestants will be judged on make-up, costume and a 15 second performance.

MASTER CLOWN MAKEUP

DOWNLOAD MASTER CLOWN COMPETITION RULES

​

I. Description:

​

  1. Individual performances will consist of one clown. The clown may be a White face, August, Hobo or Character.

  2. Clowns will be judged mainly on their theatrical ability in a performance which may last up to five minutes. Makeup and costume will be considered but will only consist of 20% of the total score.

 

II. Eligibility:

​

  1. Contestants must meet the eligibility requirements as stated in Article I, Page 1.

  2. Those who qualify as Master Clown are someone who earns a substantial portion of his/her income through clowning, certain active semi-professional clowns, those clowns whose experience or talents qualify them for this distinction or clowns who have won first place in Individual Performance within a two year period. If a question arises, the Competition Chair and the panel of judges will determine Master Clown status.

 

III.Awards:

​

  1. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place if contestants have acquired enough points to be eligible for an award.

  4. Each contestant is responsible for his/her set up and clean up. Competition Chair must approve any props being stored on stage behind curtains. No assistance is allowed unless approved by Competition Chair.

  5. Performance time is limited to five minutes. Any contestant whose performance exceeds the five minute limit will be disqualified.

  6. One minute before the time limit will expire (4 minutes into the skit) a whistle will blow to inform the performer of the one-minute time remaining. A second whistle will sound if the contestant has exceeded five minutes and is disqualified.

  7. All skits will be in good taste and in no way offensive. To ensure this, every performance must be approved in a private meeting with the competitor, the competition chair, the Sergeant at Arms and one board member. No judges will be present.

  8. Any act which causes injury to a spectator will be disqualified from the competition.

  9. A CD/MP3/IPOD player and operator will be provided by FAVE to play any CD/MP3/IPOD the contestant provides before the performance. The CD/MP3/IPOD must be present, clearly marked and ready to be played for the performance.

 

V. Judging:

​

A. All contestants will be judged according to the score sheet as follows:

  1. Is the makeup well applied and well designed? (0 - 10 points)

  2. Are the costume and accessories consistent with the character? (0 - 10 points)

  3. Has the routine been well rehearsed and well presented with good timing and direction?

    (0 - 15 points).

  4. Does the routine have broad crowd appeal? (0 - 10 points).

  5. How well does the participant fit the character being portrayed? (0 - 10 points).

  6. Do accessories such as music, sound effects, scenery and props compliment the action of the routine? (0 - 10 points).

  7. Does the performance show originality? (0 - 15 points).

  8. What is your overall rating of the contestant? (0 - 20 points)

B. Each contestant's score sheet will be available to him/her after the awards have been presented.
